Learn to Love Your Body with Authentic Yoga
Love Your Body – Inside and Out
We are living in a world where certain bodies are more worshiped than others, may it be related to weight, size, shape or colour. This programming of society can have a dramatic impact on the individual. We starve, bleach, extend or all the other things we do to match the instagram filters. The soul often doesn’t seem to count, when we judge someone’s beauty.
In the west yoga became an exercise regime focusing on the physical body. The yoga culture shows beautiful lean and bendy women, and makes many men and women alike feel like this is not for me. Yoga itself is not the problem, but classes focusing on asana (postures) alone and lacking elements of an authentic practice are. Yoga postures are just a small part of yoga and are pulled out of context in gyms and weight-loss exercise programs. This distortion of yoga comes with problems like emphasizing body issues and making it inaccessible to most people.
Yoga is about transformation, but if you think it will only help you fit in this tiny yoga outfit, think again. Yoga will help you transform your relationship with your body. Yoga teaches you that you are everything you need right now, that all the answers lie within you. By being present and learning how to focus on what is, you become an ally with your body and stop treating it like the enemy. You stop fighting against it. Yoga will help you explore your relationship with your body in a safe and patient way. You will learn how to appreciate your body as a whole and how your mental, emotional and physical are interconnected, and being in peace with one of them will help you to make peace with all of them. It will teach you to stop hurting yourself, with toxic thoughts, unhealthy food and negative energies. Yoga will show you to trust your body and when we are truly connected to our body, we start feeling it in new ways, we learn how to respect it and when we listen carefully it will tell us what it needs (or doesn’t need). Yoga will help you to accept what is and eventually will free you from suffering, if it is about your body image or anything else, that doesn’t let you sleep at night.
But be aware, find a yoga teacher that understands yoga in its foundation, and is not only about shrinking these hips one size and flying in and out of arm balances. An authentic yoga practice requires a teacher with a solid yoga education which is not only based on asana or fitness. A well rounded class includes meditation and breathing. Now and then yoga philosophy talks/studies are a necessary part of your yoga journey too. When in doubt, speak to your teacher, tell them about your goals in yoga and ask if and how yoga and they can support you in your path to learn how to love your body – inside and out.
Want to learn how to love your body?
In the upcoming Love Your Body retreat, we will work with different tools yoga provides us with. We use Yoga Nidra to reprogram our mind for self-love and self-confidence, we meditate and breathe to learn to connect with our spiritual, emotional and physical body. We will move slow and fast and experience our body in different shapes. We won’t use the body to get into the pose, but the poses to get into the body. The more you start loving and respecting your body, the more you want to treat it well, you will learn about healthy plant-based nutrition and how to integrate nutritional self-love into your daily life.
You will receive a recording of the Yoga Nidra for your personal daily practice and plenty of inspiration and guidance on how to implement yoga (ethics, breath, meditation and postures) into your self-care regime. Let us love and honour our bodies, and become an inspiration for others too.
