Find your Inner Warrior Goddess
A prayer to Durga
What do tsunamis, snowstorms, earthquakes, and wildfires have in common?
Power.
Raw, fierce, and uncontrollable. None of your actions could stop it.
This same energy can be found in a mother protecting her kid or in an activist standing up for its rights. This bravery and the inner force that we all have in us is represented in Hinduism by the goddess Durga.
Durga is a beautiful woman traditionally represented with 8-10 arms, each of them holding an object. She has weapons and a mace, representing strength, courage, and authority but also a rosary and a lotus flower, symbolizing prayers and transformation. She is riding a lion, controlling its energy. She is a strong warrior who fights fiercely but also a mother who will protect you at any cost.
You may want to invoke Durga when you need the motivation to start a project, confidence to speak up, or clarity to see beyond your ego. But Durga isn’t easily accessed. To reveal her power, you’ll have to be prepared, ask for her help and most importantly accept the change she will bring. She is here if you need her but you have to do your part and be active in this transformation.
To invoke Durga, sit in a comfortable position, and close your eyes. You may wish to have your hands in a yoni Mudra, creating a triangle with your thumbs and indexes with your fingers facing down. Keep your hands on your Sacral Chakra, your energy center representing creativity, sexuality, passion. Visualize Durga, proudly sitting on her lion. Feel its roaring energy in your belly.
Repeat the mantra “Om Dum Durgayei Namaha” 9, 27, 54 or 108 times, translating by “ I bow to you, goddess Durga”. Remember to open your heart and stay humble
When you feel her presence ask yourself:
“What do I need to let go of?”
“What is preventing me from moving on?”
“What is the battle I need to focus on?”
When you are done reflecting, bring your hands to your heart in a prayer position.
Bow to Durga, yourself, and the sacred practice yoga.
Namaste
